What do you know about HPV?
Did you know that it is estimated that over 20 million people in the United States are currently infected with Human Papiloma Virus? It is also estimated that another 5.5 million will be infected each year, according to the American Social Health Association. It is the most common STD in the world.
You’ve seen the commercials about the new prescription called Gardasil, introduced by Merck Pharmaceuticals. They are calling this the first vaccine against cancer and have been approved for use in girls as early as the age of 9. That’s what they tell you.
Here’s what they don’t tell you:
1. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease.
2. There are 60 known types or strains of HPV.
3. The most common strain comes in the form of genital warts.
4. HPV can be transmitted through skin on skin contact.
It is obvious that this new discovery should be celebrated. And it is very important that this information is conveyed through the use of commercials and that Gardisil has joined the fight against cancer. My question is, why do they not discuss the facts I mentioned above? I feel that these commercials only give partial information to its viewer they are targeting. Could it be because there could be more conservative heavy weights behind the corporation, the commercial or the broadcast companies that air them? Some may feel that expressing that HPV is an STD during a commercial targeted at young women, which is obviously transmitted through sexual activity, would create a rise in teenage sex? In my opinion, it will certainly not. Teenagers are having sex. And the teens that are having sex need to understand and be aware of all the risks that are involved with the responsibility of have sex. If teenagers knew that they could develop warts that will never go away or that they could develop a cancer that could eventually kill them, wouldn’t that help to lessen the number of teens having sex? And if the argument is no it wouldn’t stop them, then wouldn’t it at least give them the tools on protecting themselves?
What is your opinion regarding the Gardisil vaccine and the commercials used to promote it? Now that you know more facts, do you think they give enough information on these commercials regarding the risks of HPV and how it can be transmitted? Do you think that this vaccine will increase the number of teenagers having sex or do you think it will help them make smarter choices?
Til Death Do Us Part…Not Paperwork
In this country, as a same-sex couple, we do not have the equal right to marry or have a marriage as those that are recognized for heterosexual couples. We all know this and are still fighting for that equality. But if you are in a committed relationship with your partner, there are things you can do to protect yourself and each other should something happen like hospitalization or death. Let Go
Have you ever been so moved, affected or infected by someone who was once in your life, that not a day goes by that you don’t think of them? In some cases it may be from someone you once loved. Or it could be from someone who had a huge impact on your life. Maybe they changed the way you see the world. Or the way you see yourself. They may have shown you a side of yourself that you had never seen before, or never want to see again. Maybe you hurt their feelings, broke their heart or said something you regret which created their exit from your life. Maybe it was you on the receiving end. But no matter how much time has passed, they are still with you! Like a permanent impression or fixture in your life that you can’t shake. I think Sarah McLachlan says it best in her song titled “Do what you have to do”. She writes, “Every moment marked with apparitions of your soul”. And again with the line “And I have the sense to recognize that I don’t know how to let you go.”
